I would call it noise in the system of our perception. Times of 
collective insanity, through greed or anger. Maybe bad programming as 
a whole?

Entropy caused by sameness in outlook. In my view, M&D is about the 
division of reality into equal particles, Vineland is about roles 
from television absorbing us, and GR is about moral theory as a study 
of the positive "in context." A recurring Pynchon theme is the nature 
of quantitative measurements - units, figures, "order," Control - as 
a meme that destroys much of our comprehension ability.
