It's very revealing that whoever from this list posted it (anonymously,
obviously) to indymedia.org site stopped well short of claiming that it's
the transcript of an actual interview with Thomas Pynchon. The way it has
been smuggled onto the Net like that in fact diminishes the case for its
authenticity.

Ignoring the straw man arguments, Terrance has summarised the issues well
enough. My money's on someone hoodwinking the people at Playboy Japan over
the phone, or that it's something which was written up (without permission,
substance distorted) from a private conversation someone somewhere had with
Pynchon (or someone claiming to be Pynchon). Either way, it's not what it
has been promoted as here. And here is the only place it has been, and is
being, promoted.
