No eyewitness report but the circumstantial evidence might also be
considered.

College freshman in Pynchon's day (probably still the case today) had to
take a course called "Western Civilization" or something similar
sounding. .A selection from Nietzsche would be included in the Readings
book used. A smart kid like P would probably have read at least the more
interesting pieces. Nietzsche was was pretty highly regarded then among
adventurous student types. I have a copy of the readings book that was
most likely used at Cornell. This particular copy was used at Reed
College in the same years. There is a 15 page selection from "The Will
to Power"
