His interpretation of this is similar to a Theraveda Buddhist 
interpretation of "karma": it is the mechanism of the world, even if 
we hide it behind social pleasantries.

He believed it was fear of those same that caused the Christian 
dualism he so eloquently spoke against (like most of Europe's great 
philosophers).
