What a person can be get away with probably has a lot
to do with how thorough a job the local social
worker/investigator does. 

I have two longtime friends who collect disability and
they don't receive nearly enough money to live on;
fortunately they have people in their lives who help.
I've met homeless people who don't have that kind of
back-up and suffer in the street despite collecting
disability payments.

Zoyd isn't driving a welfare Cadillac. Funny, I don't
hear anybody complaining about that anymore, perhaps
because the scorn that used to be the hallmark of
extreme enemies of social programs has become
generalized and poor people have been forced to the
margins or underground or into prison, hating them
poor is as American as apple pie these days,  as
Reagan's policies finally take hold in earnest, in
Bush America "circa 2003."
