failure at the age of 50.
The novelist and poet had written more than 12 novels,
published poetry collections, but left unfinished a
1,000-page novel. [...] Bolano had planned to edit
his novel, called 2666, about the unsolved murders of
300 women in Mexico over the past 10 years, but had
been too ill. [...] During the 1970s, Bolano formed
an avant-garde group called infrarealism with other
writers and poets in Mexico. He had lived in Mexico
after leaving Chile when it fell under military
dictatorship. He returned in 1972 but left again the
next year when General Augusto Pinochet came to
