commonly shared experience. 

Any discussion of Pynchon's intentions in The Foreword
should begin with the recognition that he is writing
to and for the masses at a very impressionable age.>> 

This would be true were it likely that school systems
will trash the versions already sitting in their book
depositories and buy for the kids this new edition.

Quite unlikely, I think, and these kids are probably
not the target audience.
