Was Reading and discussing Pynchon's texts

"Off topic" and "on topic" are purely a matter of
personal taste on Pynchon-L. What one person doesn't
like becomes spam, but it's on topic when he or she
posts it, or when a buddy does.

This has become abundantly clear as a small group of
P-listers currently organizes a discussion of a
Nabokov novel. Most of the early discussion of this
project has failed to make any serious case that
reading Pale Fire will shed any light on Pynchon's
work, apart from repetition of the "Pynchon studied
with Nabokov" canard, and while it remains to be seen
how such a discussion will develop, based on the track
record of recent years, it appears likely not to come
any closer to Pynchon than that. Perhaps I'll be
pleasantly surprised, perhaps not. But one thing
that's crystal clear that "off topic" and "on topic"
have become meaningless on Pynchon-L in general and in
this particular thread in particular.

Whether davemarc likes my posts or not, many P-listers
do. I get emails from folks everyday, thanking me for
bringing one or another thing to the list's attention.

Every frequent P-list participant posts material of
only tangential or no Pynchon interest. davemarc's
math is as biased as Kyllo's. Add up the posts from
other regular participants -- fq, T, s~Z, Mackin,
Malign, Otto, jbor -- that have nothing to do with
Pynchon, nitpicking non-Pynchon-related flames, etc.,
threads in which I take no part at all. davemarc lets
reams of this stuff go by for days, weeks, and months
on end, then chooses to blame me for his frustrations
with the P-list.

By far the greatest proportion of useless data
disseminated on the list comes in the vast reams of
material from previous posts that is mindlessly
repeated in ever-lengthening threads.

The fact that davemarc has been making this sort of
complaint about the P-list since before I became a
subscriber underscores how arbitrary his choice of a
scapegoat is here.
