I remembered some page suggesting brain organization might
be as some kind of modules with spreading activation that
can recruit other modules, a scheme that might explain all
the way down from neurological, up through metaphorical,
and beyond to social processes. While I was looking for it
in my psychology cache, I found several pages of interest:

I think this web page was the recollection target:
http://www.maths.tcd.ie/~rof/neuro/42.txt

the underlying neural mechanisms which cumulatively make up
 human consciousness.

Okay. I'm really stopping.

Since Kant's precious insight, that the mind participates
in perception, I think our complexity puts it beyond us to
show that senses causally affect mind. In software analogy,
I understand an input port. But some running program that
inputs a bit, and assigns meaning to that bit (intention)
by integrating the bit into the running program's state,
uses an author's intentions not evident from the hardware.
And our minds, be we designed or autopoetic, are like that.
