One practical use of a brick is to drive a nail.
However, a hammer is more practical.
Son: Mommy, where do prescriptive grammarians come
from?
Mommy: From descriptive grammarians.
Prescriptive grammarians PRE scribe what they like and
call it prescription.
While there are many pragmatic reasons for advocating
prescription, I have yet to read one persuasive
argument in this debate. To be an effective and
convincing prescriptive linguist or to argue
prescription, one must first be a descriptive linguist
or provide descriptive evidence to support the
prescriptive argument.
