Reading this thread, I realize there's still a lot of good books out there.
But here's some in a kind of Dave Letterman way:
1.) Catch-22 by Jo. Heller.
(Time goes for a loop-de-loop)
2.) Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
(Billy Pilgrim unstuck in time)
3.) Dahlgren by SR Delaney
(Second mention by P-lister, time goes forward and arches sideways)
4.) Time's Arrow by Martin Amis.
(Time goes backwards, and as in Pynchon, how banal evil is.)
5.) Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
(Told by one, or is't four idiots--oh Quentin, splash, oh Caddy!!!)
6.) Ulysses by James Joyce
(Time stretched interminably into one 700-page day)
7.) Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov
(Time goes way forward, but, um-- predictably)
8.) A Canticle for Leibowitz by A. Miller
(The world ends but not quite)
9.) The Dispossessed by Ursula LeGuin
(Anarchy rulz, or is discovered, anyway)
10.) Angels by Denis Johnson
("Time travel" back to the '70's, trailer courts, desperation, prison,
Phoenix, AZ.)
Cool lists. I wonder why noone's mentioned Wm Vollmann, yet. Haven't
finished one of his books, but he's quite conciously like Pynchon, you think?
Anyone read
"infinite jest" or "heartbreaking work of...", or M. Chabon--oh shit, I
forgot couple, make it a Dave's list broken dozen then,
11.) Secret History by Donna Tartt
(Whoa. wow.)
12.) Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and
Autobiography of Malcolm X, will give you good background on why the Fifties
were fabulous if you were white, suburban, educated, or maybe Lucy Ricardo.
Otherwise, not so fab.
