Keep cool but care, indeed. Thinking over the brilliant
yet subtle approach Pynchon has taken in the foreword,
a few strains keep haunting me as I negotiate the
course of my day to day activities, keeping on keeping
on, trying to avoid the anterooms of annihilation.
How, for example, is doublethink- being of "at least two
minds on most issues...of inestimable use to those in power"?
One might initially have thought that such a state of uncertainty
is what Pynchon has always preached in his works. Isn't this
latest statement a complete contradiction of that time-
honored Pynchonian creed?
I'm still trying to decode this message. Only about half of
it has sunk in. I'm beginning to feel more and more like Julia
myself- someone has me by the shoulders and is calmly yet
earnestly attempting to help me see something important
about these times. I think the examples of Rex and Frenesi
might hold some clues, but I haven't quite gotten it.
respectfully
