I'm not a psychiatrist (though I do sometimes play one on cable television) 
but I'm guessing that one of the worst ways to avoid the anterooms of 
annihilation is trying to decode messages while going about mundane duties.  
Perhaps splitting the banal from the sublime will serve you better.  That is, 
don't think about Pynchon/Orwell until after you've had a very good lunch and 
a little nap.
