You can use the essay to speculate about how the premises in it relate to
9/11, but Pynchon is mute on the event. Any reviewer of the foreword who
sees it as stating specific points about 9/11 has to explain why points
about 9/11 don't actually appear anywhere in the essay. So, they have to
resort to allusion and coyness and hinting, and in Knipfel's case, use a lot
of assertion hedging parentheses.
