Why not state the obvious? He's done it before. Moreover, as you note,
he says lots of obvious things in the Foreword. I didn't expect a 
ham-handed screed or a subtle implication. When I read that P was going
to publish a Foreword to Orwell's classic I wondered why he would do it.
I thought that he would have something to say about 9-11 and the
aftermath. Why not?  The
arguments about why P would say what Doug and others here claim he says
are good ones. Problem is, he doesn't say any of what they say he does.
That too bad. A missed opportunity as far as I'm concerned.
