I don't believe the helicopter serves as a deus ex machina in Vineland.
Budgetary restrictions do, don't they?
If so, that still means that the helicopter symbolism in Pynchon remains
consistent. As I've written before, the threat of air power is a Pynchon
motif that's been present in his writing for decades.
