Of course, _The Guardian_ only printed up a bowdlerised version of the
essay, without even ellipses indicating where they made their cuts. The
"fascistic disposition" paragraph reads quite differently, and quite
logically, in its actual, unbowdlerised context in the Foreword. It's worth
repeating this point, particularly in respect of Pynchon's remarks about the
way the media influences "public opinion" through "rewritten history,
official amnesia and outright lying". (xiii)
