No, no backpedalling at all, rather an increasingly
exasperating attempt to explain a simple function of
language, especially but hardly exclusively "literary"
language, which I'd (mistakenly?) assumed would have
needed no explanation whatsoever here, in the
direction (no puns where none intended ...) of how
such tropes as, say, allusion, allegory, what have
you, function.  By, say, resemblance, similitude,
resonance, whatever, but not by representation per se.
 Not that these don't all bleed together around the
edges, but ... but, again, the pointed theme here is
government response to a domestic attack, not to
mention domestic response to govt. response, et al. 
And published in 2003 ...
