And thanks for explaining, but there are clever
analogies and there are crude, there are sharp
metaphors and dull, there are oafish writers and there
are those one expects somewhat more of.

Pynchon once offered the striking, marvelous image of
the detonation of an atomic bomb as a rising erection
sprouted by the earth, a reversal of most images of
bombs in descent.  I trust he could have done better
than air raids had he been intent on evoking September
11, rather than discussing Orwell.
