And for the record, in response to Rob Jackson's
constant baiting, I'll note that Robert mounted what I
took after a while to be an offlist harrassment
campaign. As they were at first continuations of
onlist exchanges, being new to the List, I didn't
quite realize at first that I was getting messages
that weren't being posted to everyone else. I then
posted a response thinking I'd merely hit "reply"
rather than "reply all," and only later found that I
was getting personal treatment. Even as Rob was
posting furiously to the List as well. In the end,
having posted the one response, I posted the exchange
in order to avoid confusion, and so everybody could
better understand the situation.
In all fairness, I had a similar situation going on at
the time with Charles Hollander, though taht was
rather more clearly marked as offlist. The Dude
occsaionally keeps in touch when the mood strikes him,
for which I'm eternally grateful, as, while I so often
find myself completely unqualified to respond, I
always manage to learn rather more than a little
something. Doug and I have gone at it periodically as
well, but I've always been able to come out of these
exchanges feeling I've not made enemies.
The rest of you, well, I think we've hit it off quite
swimmingly offlist, and was particularly glad to have
struck up the occasional and quite constructive (at
least for me) exchange of information with Kai, with
whom I'd formerly had perhaps as bitter an onscreen
relationship as I continue to have with Robert. Gald
to see you back, Kai ...
Anyway, after a few rounds of this with Rob, as I
began to feel as if I was being kept busy offlist in
order to be kept too preoccupied to post to the List,
I asked that all such exchanges be kept onlist (I'm
constantly astounded by the time some of you have for
this, or even for being online in general). As I
recall, this was largely honored thereafter, save for
maybe one particularly terse reply of, I believe,
Anglo-Saxon derivation, but also a few kind offlist
(though why offlist, I wonder, when y'all get so
gratuitously gracious with each other onlist from time
to time) "thank yous," one for an excerpt I'd posted,
the other for fielding the odd chapter in the last M&D
reading. For which I again (and again and again ...)
say, yr very welcome ...
And I'm sure the same was said in return for my
repeated appreciations of Robert (and, again, tahnks
again and again ...) reagrding his heroic mounting of
that very same M&D reading, though I don't recall
reading any. In fact, I don't recall reading much
from anybody in this regard, so, while we're at it,
let me axe y'all again to thank Rob for keeping at it,
even as I was having a breakdown in far flung Brooklyn
on the cusp of hosting Ch. 50, and persisting to the
bitter(sweet) end ...
It was a hell of a research incentive for me, and I
learned a hell of a lot from everyone else involved,
even when we disagreed. Extra-special thanks to Keith
for sharing a Major Clue with me. I even made a few
minor contributions of my own, I believe. And if
nothing else, the little rivalry, such as it is,
betwixt Rob and I did spur me to work out just who
those mysterious "German enthusiasts" might be, with
an assist from David Morris, who showed me the way via
my own strangely neglected etymological methods. A
minor triumph, but it was a sticking point ...
Anyway, I'm not much concerned to have anyone respond
to me, esp. the way things are going these days, and
Rob's apparently more familiar with my posts than I am
with his of late ("my first compliment" ...), but, as
I've said before, I'm happy to respond to anything
that catches my eye as somehow pertaining to me. If i
miss anything, I simply wasn't reading. Sorry, I just
haven't had the time, is all. okay, sorry to have
wasted everybody's server storage/inbox memory/printer
paper/time ...

But I'll make sure to pass that on to him, as I'm not
sure he's currently subscribed. A Jackson/Hollander
axis--who'd've thunk it? Lions, lambs ...
