There's an article about Thomas Berger in today's
Village Voice Literary Supplement on-line; in the
print version as well, I suppose.

He's long seemed to me the most underrated of American
novelists--people seem to know he wrote Little Big Man
if they know him at all--and one of the darkest and
funniest. Much of his humor comes from a refined,
mock-fussy style, put in the service of low, dark,
sometimes violent material.

I'll specifically recommend Neighbors, The Houseguest,
and Who Is Teddy Villanova, but any other will do.
He's written twenty plus books and there's probably
not one not worth reading.

Anyway, here's the link.
