No, it's not a typo. Insert a double comma and it's a bit easier to
digest. 

"At the phone number in Carmine's note   [pause]   turned out to be
[pause]         Carmine himself."



Carmine was "at the phone" or Carmine answered the phone when T called
the number. 

The note is at page 158 second paragraph.
