Looking back from where we are (sensitive males, a little guilty, in
touch with our feminist side) it looks simple: two tales and one
prevails. But that's not what happened at all. Think about it. Why are
there only Two Tales?

Actually, in Pynchon's novel, VL there is only one.

Of course the Fall, the guilt of Adam, of Eve, of the Serpent ... so on
... has been a matter of great dispute for centuries. There are
thousands of tales.

Robert Graves talks about a few of these in his WG. He mentions the
Clementines. The rejected the so-called Orthodox reading (Adam and Eve
sin) and put the Onus on the Serpent. Another good Fall tale is Milton's
PL.

Milton, apparently, was a tough father and has been accused of abusing
his daughter and mistreating his first wife. One should certainly read
his Doctrine on Divorce and his Christian Doctrine not to mention a good
biography before dismissing this opinion as the kind of hot-button
publish or perish scholarship that has authors like Melville tossing his
wife down a stair and falling in love with NH, but Milton's Eve, given
the times, is quite radical.

Well, Milton was a radical after all.
