We known from the translator of "Mason & Dixon" that Pynchon had checked the
translation, had answered questions. I have no reason to believe that it's
been different with "Vineland" so if the German text is unambiguous this
might be in accordance with the author. To understand "Vietnamveteran" you
don't have to be a master in German.
"bush vet" is sufficiently explained by the words "since the war" a few
lines later.
