Never meant to imply that Nixon and Reagan appear in Vineland as
'characters'. Sorry if you got that impression. And I'll have to check this,
but I seem to recall both these monsters being explicitly named in the book,
along with (and God help me did we ever imagine we would have to say this)
the first president Bush. In any case, as portrayed in Vineland, the spectre
of Nixon hangs pretty heavily over the late 60s, and Reagan is at the very
core of the central narrative strand in the 80s.
