I lived in  Arcata in Humboldt County for 8 years and I 've met the loggers, back to the landers, dope-growers, scrabblers, and radicals that fill this book.  So far I like them a lot better than I like your take on them.  I just don't read Pynchon as a hyper-critical despiser of everyone who doesn't fit his moral ideals. And as far as your lambasting his humor,  how about coming up with a better comic novel yourself. Hell, a comic sentence or paragraph would be  a good change. 

 I don't think
it's that glowing a family portrait at all -- they're cheats and shysters
and career-loggers,
