As Malign explains, Hajdu asked questions, Pynchon
answered, and Hajdu called the process an interview --
corroborating my earlier post, thanks.

With all due respect, in the absence of bibliographic
information, it's difficult to assess the claim that
Hajdu made the other statements that Malign attributes
to him.

Pynchon appears to have had ambivalent, even
contradictory feelings towards and relations with the
press -- in this respect, he's not unlike many other
human beings -- and his interactions with reporters,
researchers, etc. have been varied. He's reported to
have literally run away from one reporter, in an early
phase of his career, and yet in 1997 he reached out
and telephoned CNN, even allowing himself to be
interviewed by the CNN producer who took the call. He

has ignored many requests for interviews, but he
accepted the Playboy Japan invitation, and Hajdu's.
He's contributed a steady stream of pieces to the New
York Times, and is said to have initiated an interview
with a journalist a few years ago (since the
publication of M&D) and then backed away from the
project -- facts that seem to belie the position that
he hates reporters and journalism. Go figure. The
guy's human, capable of changing his mind, exhibiting
contradictory behavior. Why is that so hard for some
critics to accept?
