Not exactly mature adults is what Pynchon describes in Vineland, Frenesi
was only 25 when she betrayed the PR3 and the 24fps collective she took
control of when she was only 22. The satire in Vineland cuts much
deeper than an attack on a bunch of kids who try to change the world
and fail. First off, Pynchon doesn't permit us to let the kids off the
hook because they never grow up. And, like Benny, they have not learned
a thing. But the WSC (the one in V. and the one in VL) is not the main
target of Pynchon's satire. And so neither is Brock Vond or Hector or
the Government's wars (JFK/RFK, LBJ, Nixon/Reagan/Bush ... Vietnam ...
Oil ... Central America ... Drugs.).
Back to the kids:
How old were Upton Sinclair, Walter Lippmann, Clarance Darrow, and Jack
London when they founded ISS, the precurser of SDS?
And what about the kids that got it all going back in 1962? Just kids,
but boy do they look good next to those fools blowing themselves up in
NYC.
I posted a few paragraphs from Tom Hayden's Port Huron Statement, a
Manifesto of the Left. It's brilliant. And the movement, a democratic
organization with a democratic method, and democratic goals, should be
studied and should be admired for what it accomplished and how it did
its work. GR looks very favorably on this kind of youth movement, but
Pynchon is a satirist and so he aims his arrows at the 1968 fiasco (at
violence and the dance of death) and at communism.
NY has been shut down enough recently. The Black Out, 9-11, we're
hurting pretty bad with no job opportunities and all sorts of bad shit
in the air. How about a a little peace. How about shutting up and
putting up NY for a change?
