It's probably time to out REX, or at least question his means of support.
The porsche, the beachside digs, the tv, the refridg full of goodies- he's
a graduate student. Who's paying for all this stuff?
Brock knows him very well. He's collaborating and has been since before
24fps arrived on the scene. Nothing else explains Brock's intimate knowledge
of Rex's personality. The narration of the Brock-Frenesi scenes are skewed
toward Frenesi's pov. Brock's deceptions are made explicit mainly through
Frenesi's reactions or things Brock says out loud. He's not honest with her.
Clearly Brock is a liar, and there is no reason to believe he isn't lying
through his Kennedy-esque smile when he tells Frenesi that Rex "is
still pure'" and doesn't know that the gun is Brock's- like he doesn't know
where the money for the porsche and the rest of his comfy lifestyle are
coming from. Rex enjoys his "secret identity" and he clearly enjoys deceiving
Weed and the rest of College of the Surf crowd.
The trail of this tragedy leads through Rex's fringe bag. First the keys
for Bruno- given up a little too gracefully- and why not, if there were
promises
of payoffs and replacements by those who supplied them in the first
place- then the gun, There's nothing in the text to discount the possibility
of Rex egging on Frenesi as much as the other way around. And why
wouldn't Rex be suspicious about where Frenesi got the gun? He's not stupid,
He wouldn't just assume it was an anonymous gift if it just turned up one day
free for the using. Clearly it only makes sense if Rex was well aware of its
source and was playing dumb for Frenesi's sake.
And after this assignment, it's off to another- next stop Paris- and another
group to infiltrate and turn. You can be sure that if Rex isn't flying first
class,
it's merely to enhance his cover as a poor post-doc, coming to join the real
revolutionaries.
respectfully
