I don't know why I'm wasting my time trying to tune your
off-shore ear to the America idiom, I guess I must like you,
inspite of your snideness. And while I can understand how
you might be overly sensitive to Zipi's comments, e.g., about
surfer-types fucking and jogging away anonymously, even
the Californians realize that she's goofin' on them:
This amused the others.(196)
The Pisks are well aware of how they're being stereotyped,
but they have the grace to deal with it, and to keep the
the collective, which they founded with Frenesi, together
and amused on those long tiring stretcches between real
danger and the chance for real meaningful and cutting-edge
filmmaking. All of which is not necessarily besides the
point I'm making about the wonderful way in which Pynchon
demonstrates the power of femininity to tie and bind together
an otherwise cold and divisive world.

"Magnin's?" Zipi would smile grimly. "OK for a shopping center,
somewhere on Long Island perhaps, very nice ladies' toilet of
course, but please, this is no major store." Ditzah was the food
kvetch -- "Try and get a danish *anywhere* out here!" (196.20)
"Rebelling against their upbringing, slumming it, out for a bit of a lark"
See, for example, 194.18-23 and 196.32-197.2 in particular.
