Thank goodness that Thomas Pynchon, a New Yorker,
knows more about that city and its culture than jbor,
and that, perhaps based on his off-and-on residence in
California, Pynchon can make authoritative comparisons
of the two.
I'm astonished that jbor is trying to suppress the
fact that Sale was a college friend of Pynchon's, that
they worked on an opera (I think that's it, somebody
please correct me if I've got it wrong) that Sale's
wife, Faith Sale, was an editor of GR, and that Sale
wrote a book on the Luddites years before Pynchon
tackled that same subject in _Mason & Dixon_. Why jbor
would skip over these important facts is a mystery --
or perhaps it's just simple ignorance, and if that's
the case, a simple question for the many New Yorkers
on the P-list would suffice, instead of a series of
smug but incorrect (and more than a little insulting
to Jewish women and New Yorkers more generally)
assertions. Just a suggestion...
Thanks to Toby for the good VLVL notes and hosting.
It's especially useful to hear from people with
first-hand knowledge of the 60s scene that Pynchon
works with in Vineland -- insight that the younger
folks just can't match no matter how many Web pages
they look at.
