<<Well, although I remember watching the moon landing,
I
can't claim that I much registered what the (big) kids
were wearing at the time, but yr army surplus wear is
stereotpically "hippie" here (then it migrates on to
yr 70s era "burnouts"). But don't take my word ...>>

Army/Navy stores were like the Gap in the sixties, a
good cheap source of durable clothes. Where, does one
suppose, bellbottoms, as a fashion, originated? There
was little about it that could be read as antiwar
commentary.

The trend spread as well to secondhand stores. When I
was in college, half the men, in winter, were dressed
in five-dollar, thirty-year-old overcoats and
shapeless woolen pants.

The campus looked like a gulag.
