Fo anyone who might be interested, the attached link
is to an article by Jonathan Yardley about A.J.
Liebling, something of an introduction to Leibling for
any of you who might not be familiar with him.
Long dead, Leibling was a wonderful writer, affiliated
with the New Yorker, where his beat was mostly what he
called low-life. Books worth seeking out are The
Sweet Science, which is a collection of boxing
articles; The Honest Rainmaker, the life of Colonel
John R. Stingo; and The Telephone Booth Indians, the
latter two incorporated in a single volume called
Liebling At Home. There are others, just as good,
although availability can be a problem.
Yardley's article is mostly about The Earl of
Louisiana, Leibling's book on Earl Long, another gem.
Yardley, intending a compliment, compares Leibling to
Mencken, although if you, as I do, find Mencken dated
and ponderous near to unreadability, don't be put off
by the comparison; Leibling's a much much better
writer than Mencken.
