You've got the shoe on the wrong foot. The so called "fundamentalists"
(not the best term because it defines a trend in American
Christianity--harshly satirized in Pynchon's Vineland and M&D) and their
terroristic alliances are the fascists. Like the Twentieth-century
fascists, these 21st century fascists reject liberal democracy. They
proposes a clergy ruling class. They are also authoritarian,
proclaiming a loyalty
to sacred texts, their goal is to creating a religious state of Islam
spanning the globe. They may also be called Totalitarian, because they
hold that religious laws should be applied to all aspects of life. While
the oil may be the grease in the gears, they are anti-American because
we are Modern and we are the great experiment (successful, for the most
part) in secularization. I agree with Robert, this Playboy Japan
"interview" reads like a hoax because it what Pynchon is reported to
have said is directly contradicted by everything he has said or written
elsewhere. The obvious example, in prose anyway, is his recent
Introduction to Orwell's _1984_.
