I found a remarkable passage in White Noise that reads like a
rewriting of "The Secret Integration". In my edition (Penguin) it can
be found at pp. 258-9, anyway it's in Ch. 34, and it's when Gladney
examines the trash bag, emptying it in the garage and picking though
the waste item by item. The thoughts of Jack read like a comment on
Pynchon's story...
"I picked though them item by item, mass by shapeless mass, wondering
why I felt guilty, a violator of privacy, uncovering intimate and
perhaps shameful secrets. (...) But why did I feel like a household
spy? Is garbage so private? Does it glow at the core with personal
heat, with signs of one's deepest nature, clues to secret yearnings,
humiliating flaws?"
WHich is the basic idea of Pynchon's SI.
