This was the beginning of an unpleasant thread I have joined and
regret having joined. Discussing with Mr Jbor about Pynchon is one
thing, and can be quite productive and interesting. Discussing about
football, a sport that has almost no place in Pynchon's world is a
totally different matter. I guess the only footballer he ever put in
a novel was Rauhandel, the German player in GR.
But then here is the end of the fair, as people say in N Italy, and
what we feared came true. Btw, what happened is what Mr cfalbert
hoped would happen:
> I certainly hope the scandinavians play to a high scoring tie, and by
> means fair or foul eliminate the Azzuri....
And that's what the fair-playing Vikings did. So the final result is
that Italy, this corrupt and corrupting team, was eliminated by an
unashamed combine between those honorable teams of honorable men. I
hope cfalbert is happy now; and obviously I come to bury Caesar, not
to praise him.
So back to Pynchon, and let the honorable teams reap what they
deserve. However, I'd rather avoid the adjective "fair" for such
transactions. Unless you use it to describe the complexion of the
honorable men--all honorable men.
