One tack you might take to avoid an undue comparison is to
start with his nonfiction.  Check out _A Supposedly Fun
Thing I'll Never Do Again_ (particularly the title piece
and the one about the Illinois state fair *Getting Away
from Already Being Pretty Much Away from It All*.
 Absolutely hilarious.

If you like it, proceed immediately to Infinite Jest.  If
you find that you are disappointed, continue reading until
you've read at least two iterations of each of the three
major elements: (1) The tennis academy (2) the halfway
house (3) the quebequois separatists.  If you still aren't
digging, then ah well.  Life is short. Give it to a friend.
