The movie was Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938) directed by Ernst Lubitsch.
The locale was the Riviera, so the store couldn't have been Macy's.

 Billy Wilder helped write the script. 

Wilder's idol was Lubitsch it is said.

Had a sign on his door saying "How would Lubitsch do it."
