Okay, then, if Pamuk's fair game, I'd recommend the White Castle and even
more, My Name is Red. Also, Helprin's even better Memoirs from Antproof Case
and Soldier of the Great War. His Refiner's Fire reminds me of the stuff in
Slow Learner, in the sense that it's essentially juvenilia with flashes of
brilliance. I know, I have 15 seconds to crawl into the bomb shelter before
the flames erupt, but it was worth it.
