M&D help needed: the owner of the Rifle

Who is the White Man Catfish took his Rifle (with the notorious 
inverted star) from? I can't remember that! Catfish talks about that 
in ch. 70, p. 680-1 of the Jonathan Cape edition (which has the same 
page # of the original US hardback edition). M&D know who Catfish is 
talking about. Somebody they've met before. But who?
