Can you be a little more specific?

How pagan  culture/practices/beliefs/ideas were incorporated, transformed, driven underground reinterpreted etc. as Christianity gained prevalence in Europe. How christian leaders  adapted their faith to Pagan practicesand ideas. Perhaps some good studies of  ancient polytheistic myth and rituals might be helpful also. Is Joseph Campbell's Masks of God  (Occidental religions) a good source?
