Peter Brown's still a favorite historian of the early
church.  Oh, and maybe see Ramsay McMullen and Eugene
Lane, eds., Paganism and Christianity, 100-425 C.E.: A
Sourcebook, apparanetly a compendium of early relevant
documents.  But I'll axe around ...
