I can't agree, esteemed colleague. jbor, Hector, and
Brock may morally judge 60s rebels calling them
"negligent" and worse, but Pynchon's depictions of his
counterculture characters go beyond harping on a few
character defects and bad choices made under appalling
pressure and manipulation at the hands of US
government agents -- they are generally sympathetic
and understanding, not condemning. Pynchon makes Zoyd
and co. one big happy at the novel's end (they even
accept Frenesi back from beyond the pale), while
depicting Brock with no redeeming social values and
condemning him to a kind of living hell.
