Once they're voted in, ideology is dispensable, but religion/ideology is
required to attract voters and the other "grass-root" followers needed to
get there.  I do think that Guardian piece is wrong is dismissing the
fascistic tendencies of any group that postulates that "if you're not with
us, you're against us."

Not sure the Republicans NEED any ideology in the year 2004 except
ANYTHING GOES. Today the real business of politics is getting and/or
staying rich. Having God on one's side has became just a SIDEshow.
