Just did a ten minutes call to Munich to talk to Herbert Debes who "did"
(if he did) the interview with Pynchon 11 years ago. Therefor the "error"
about "Vineland" being his last novel.
Interestingly he refused to deny or verify the authenticity of the
interview.
"The people," he says, "have to decide themself if they consider it a fake
or not." He pointed repeatedly to the meaning(s) of the word "clandestine,"
but my French isn't that good.
He claims that Pynchons speaks an excellent German, so there's no
English version of this interview - despite the fact that there was a
(fake?) translator:
"(Anmerkung d. Übersetzers: Pynchon verwendet hier den deutschen Ausdruck)."
Scratching my head I admit I'm unsure about it but I still tend to take it
as a well-done fake.
But the Glanz at Elend-website is very interesting and well-done:
