There's a novel I'd lost track of since the 60s in which a bookish, drug
using, would be writer, expatriate Scotsman is working on a scow in New
York Harbor and becomes totally enthralled by the wife of a fellow
boatman. She has an artificial leg and they make love one night while
her husband is away. The scene is extremely touching. The novel is
Cain's Book by Alexander Trocchi now long dead. Another of his novels
was made into a movie Young Adam. Also incidentally involving the wife
of a fellow boat person. Cain's Book is very good on the use of pot
(what they called it back then) and other chemical substances.
