Am I Annoying?

Thomas Pynchon has spent a lifetime avoiding
publicity, and has finally been rewarded for it. The
reclusive author has been added to an amusing Web site
(www.amiannoying.com) that lists the famous and
infamous and allows anyone with a mouse to decide if
someone is annoying or not. Part of the case for
Pynchon's annoyingness: "His novels are extremely
complex and contain many allusions and references that
can be difficult to understand." And for the defense:
"He made his only voluntary public appearance on an
episode of 'The Simpsons.' "

The Resume
(May 8, 1937-)
Wrote 'V,' 'The Crying of Lot 49,' 'Gravity's
Rainbow,' 'Slow Learner,' 'Vineland' and 'Mason &
Dixon'
Married to his agent, Melanie Jackson

Why he might be annoying

His novels are extremely complex and contain many
allusions and references that can be difficult to
understand.

His writings usually focus on paranoia, conspiracy,
entropy and are notoriously anti big business.

He is extremely reclusive, and the only known photos
date back to the 1950s.

It was once said that he leaped out a window to avoid
getting his picture taken by a magazine.

He refuses any representation of his likeness to
appear on a television screen.

He reluctantly gave an interview to CNN after they
invaded his privacy by tracking him down and filming
him (1997).

It was once rumored that 'Thomas Pynchon' was actually
the pen name of J.D. Salinger, who also happens to be
reclusive.

His Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for 'Gravity's Rainbow'
was overturned after eleven members of the board
called the book unreadable, turgid, overwritten and
obscene (1974).

He was a junior.

Why he might not be annoying

He has won numerous awards for his writings.

He worked as an engineering aide on Boeing's nuclear
missile projects.

'Gravity's Rainbow' has been called the most profound
and accomplished American novel since the end of World
War II.

His books often feature very dark satire.

He defends being reclusive by saying, 'My belief is
that recluse is a code word generated by
journalists... meaning, doesn't like to talk to
reporters.'

He has an intense knowledge of psychology, mathematics
and German literature.

He made his only voluntary public appearance on an
episode of The Simpsons (2003).
