I'm not so sure that anyone is "innocent," or, at any
rate, free of (tainted, corrupt, plain ol') Power,
authority, whatever, in Vineland, reagrdless of how
sympathetic we might be to them, we might want to be
to them.  From Zoyd's dependence on a gov't stipend to
Prairie's love/hate reaction to Brock Vond ... well,
again, R. Rorty complains that Pynchon's depictio of
Power is too pessimistic, too Foucauldian (though RR
might well be misreading MF there as well ...) ...
