Good points Otto. I'll just point out that the
accusing Kerry of a lack of patriotism was a high
point of Republican National Convention, in Zell
Miller's rabid, hateful, fact- and logic-free speech,
one of the very few that were broadcast in prime time
on the national TV networks. Among the many good
analyses of Miller's rant, Sydney Schanberg's in the
Village Voice is one of the best, at
http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0436/schanberg.php.
FOX News is making this same point over and over
again, too -- I'm not sure if that's an accurate
reflection of the way that right-leaning Americans
feel, or if it is instead the view of a smaller number
of opinion-makers who want to influence the majority
to feel that way. I don't agree that the majority of
Americans have become more "hawkish". Certainly the
majority is afraid of terrorist attacks and concerned
for their personal safety, but most Americans don't
support the Iraq war.
