When I was eleven years old, my cousin Joe and I attempted to camp out on
the beach outside of his parents place in Lubec Maine. Around five A.M. the
cold beat us back into the house. My aunt Nell was expecting us. She had
local bacon with buttermilk blueberry pancakes made with wild blueberries
that she had picked the day before. No breakfast before or since has ever
come close. That was the last day that I saw her alive.

Whenever I have breakfast in a restaurant, and they have blueberry pancakes
on the menu, I must order them. They don't ever measure up. But I have to
order them anyway. That's my little tribute to my aunt. Numbers 2 thru 10
don't count.
